Air Products' Ambitious Hydrogen Refuelling Station Expansion in Europe
Key Ideas
  • Air Products plans to develop a network of hydrogen refuelling stations near the TEN-T corridors in Europe, with renewable hydrogen supply from its global chain.
  • The company's Rotterdam-based hydrogen plant, set to be Europe's largest blue hydrogen plant, will contribute to the refuelling stations.
  • European Commission's CEF funding program is supporting current and upcoming hydrogen stations, one of which is already operational in Duisburg, Germany, refuelling Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks.
  • Air Products is trialling hydrogen-powered vehicles in its distribution fleet, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing emissions.
Air Products has revealed plans to establish a network of hydrogen refuelling stations along major transportation corridors in Europe, particularly near the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). These stations will be supplied with renewable hydrogen sourced from the company's global supply chain. The hydrogen supply will also come from Air Products' upcoming Rotterdam-based hydrogen plant, expected to be Europe's largest blue hydrogen facility. The European Commission's Connection Europe Facility (CEF) funding program is supporting the development of several of these stations, some of which are already operational. Air Products is leveraging this initiative by trialling hydrogen-powered Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks for customer distribution trials in Duisburg, Germany. The company's Chairman emphasized the importance of moving towards a hydrogen fleet for logistics operations. The liquid hydrogen-fuelled GenH2 trucks offer a range of over 1,000 kilometers, with cost and weight advantages over compressed gaseous hydrogen, enabling higher payloads. Daimler Truck AG's Chairman stressed the need for comprehensive infrastructure and cost parity to make sustainable transportation successful. Air Products had previously announced similar plans for hydrogen station corridors in Canada, signaling a global commitment to hydrogen infrastructure development. These developments underscore the growing momentum towards sustainable energy solutions in the transportation industry.
