AlcalHylab: Pioneering Sustainable Hydrogen Production Technology
Key Ideas
  • AlcalHylab, a joint research laboratory between Michelin, CNRS, and academic partners, aims to develop low-carbon and sustainable hydrogen production technology using water.
  • The partnership seeks to overcome current challenges in green hydrogen production, focusing on developing next-generation materials for efficient and eco-friendly electrolysis.
  • The creation of the AEMWE technology, combining the advantages of different electrolysis methods, shows promise for boosting green hydrogen production on an industrial scale.
  • The collaboration highlights a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation, aiming to reduce carbon reliance and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon industry.
The creation of AlcalHylab, the tenth joint research laboratory between Michelin and the CNRS, in Grenoble signifies a significant step towards developing sustainable hydrogen production technology. The partnership involving Michelin, CNRS, Grenoble Alpes University, Grenoble INP - UGA, and Savoie Mont Blanc University focuses on addressing the challenges in green hydrogen production, which currently accounts for less than 1% of total global production. The joint research teams aim to design a hydrogen production technology, AEMWE, utilizing water electrolysis and next-generation materials composed of elements abundant in the earth's crust to achieve low-carbon and sustainable hydrogen production. This innovative approach combines the benefits of alkaline water electrolysis and PEMWE technology to create an Anion-Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer (AEMWE) that aims to produce high-quality hydrogen efficiently and in an environmentally compliant manner. The partnership between Michelin and the academic institutions demonstrates a long-term commitment to exploring hydrogen technology for reducing CO2 emissions and fostering energy transition. By leveraging expertise in materials science, the joint laboratory signifies a collaborative effort towards innovation and sustainability in the pursuit of a low-carbon industry.
