In Belgium, the construction of the country's first green hydrogen plant, Hyoffwind, has commenced in Zeebrugge, signifying a crucial advancement in the nation's energy transition. The project, expected to be operational by the end of 2026, is a joint endeavor between Messer, Virya Energy, Hyoffgreen, and the Flemish Energy Holding, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually. Alongside this, TotalEnergies has struck agreements with Air Liquide to leverage green hydrogen for emission reduction at its refineries in Antwerp and Zeeland. TotalEnergies plans to establish a 250 MW electrolyser near its Zeeland refinery by 2029, capable of producing up to 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year. This initiative, amounting to a €600 million investment, is anticipated to receive governmental support to bolster the transition to cleaner industrial energy sources. Additionally, a plan to produce 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually near Rotterdam will cut emissions by 150,000 tonnes at the Antwerp refinery, contributing to the site's overall emissions reduction strategy. These projects align with Europe's decarbonisation goals and underline the role of green hydrogen in the region's shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
