Costain has secured a significant contract to lead the front-end engineering and design (FEED) process for a new hydrogen pipeline network in Teesside, UK. The project, part of the H2Teesside (H2T) initiative operated by bp, will see the construction of a 31km onshore pipeline designed to transport blue hydrogen to industrial consumers. The development of this network is a crucial step in the decarbonisation journey, aiming to replace natural gas with low-carbon hydrogen. Costain's role in this project includes managing the engineering, procurement, and construction of the CO₂ system, with detailed engineering design work set to commence soon. Additionally, Technip Energies has been tasked with the FEED for the hydrogen production site. The overall project is expected to be completed by 2025 and is anticipated to bring environmental benefits, job creation, and skill development to the Teesside region. Costain's managing director, Sam White, highlighted the transformative impact of the project on both decarbonisation efforts and the local economy.
