EET Hydrogen Power: Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready CHP Plant
Key Ideas
- Essar Energy Transition launches EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's first hydrogen-ready CHP plant at Stanlow refinery.
- The plant aims to reach 125MW of power and reduce 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum by replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen.
- EET's investment supports decarbonisation goals for Stanlow refinery and the HyNet industrial cluster, aiming to cut emissions by 95% by 2030.
- The project not only contributes to regional emissions' reduction targets but also supports the growth of high skilled employment in the North West of England.
Essar Energy Transition (EET), a UK-based clean energy investor, has introduced EET Hydrogen Power, claiming it as Europe's pioneering hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant to be constructed at its Stanlow refinery by 2027. The project, developed in two phases to achieve 125MW power capacity and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, will replace hydrocarbons with hydrogen, leading to a substantial reduction of 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. This initiative forms a vital part of EET Fuels' strategy to cut emissions by 95% by 2030. CEO Rob Wallace envisions Stanlow as a low carbon transition hub within the HyNet Industrial Cluster, emphasizing the significance of EET Hydrogen Power in enabling regional emissions' reduction targets. The investment not only supports EET Fuels' decarbonisation objectives but also facilitates the provision of low-carbon power to other industrial users in the HyNet industrial cluster, aligning with their decarbonisation aims. Overall, this venture is part of EET's $3 billion energy transition initiatives in North West England, reflecting its commitment to promoting high skilled employment and sustainable energy practices in the region.
