The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative's latest position paper, presented during Hydrogen Week, underscores the critical need for public backing to kick-start investments in hydrogen infrastructure. The envisioned network aims to connect hydrogen production sites with major consumption hubs in the EU, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective energy supply. The development of this dedicated hydrogen infrastructure requires substantial investment, and the EHB advocates for support from EU institutions and Member States to de-risk these projects and facilitate the establishment of a pan-European hydrogen network. By leveraging a mix of repurposed natural gas pipelines, underground storage facilities, and port terminals, the EHB intends to create a 58,000-kilometer hydrogen pipeline network by 2040.
