Himachal Pradesh's Leap Towards Green Energy: North India's First Green Hydrogen Plant
Key Ideas
  • Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for north India's first 1 MW green hydrogen plant, a collaboration between HPPCL and Oil India Ltd.
  • The project aims to establish the state as a leader in renewable energy and sustainability, with a production capacity of 423 kg of green hydrogen per day.
  • The plant will utilize renewable sources for electrolysis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a cleaner energy ecosystem.
  • The government's broader focus on green energy includes a target of achieving 500 MW of solar energy and a commitment to becoming India's first Green Energy State by March 2026.
In a significant milestone towards sustainable energy solutions, Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu inaugurated the foundation stone for north India's first 1 MW green hydrogen plant in Dabhota, Solan district. The project, a collaboration between Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (HPPCL) and Oil India Ltd, is set to be established at a cost of Rs 9.04 crore. The plant's construction is aimed to be completed within a year. Sukhu emphasized the state's commitment to becoming the country's first Green Energy State by March 2026, with the Dabhota green hydrogen plant playing a pivotal role. This innovative project will be pivotal in Himachal Pradesh's journey towards renewable energy and sustainability. By utilizing power from renewable sources for electrolysis, the plant is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner energy ecosystem. With a production capacity of 423 kg of green hydrogen per day and an annual estimate of 1,54,395 kg, the plant will utilize underground water reserves and electricity for hydrogen production. The state government's MoU with Oil India Ltd in 2023 underscores its broader focus on green energy, including solar energy, geothermal energy, compressed biogas, and now green hydrogen. This initiative showcases the government's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and marks a positive step towards achieving its renewable energy targets.
