The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs in Indonesia is spearheading the development of five ambitious clean hydrogen projects in the country. These projects, which include the Batam Bintan Green Hydrogen Cluster, Sumatra Clean Hydrogen Cluster, Cilegon clean hydrogen cluster, North Sulawesi Green Ammonia Cluster, and Sumatra-Java Blue Ammonia Project, are set to utilize Indonesia's renewable energy resources and carbon storage capabilities. The Batam Bintan and Sumatra clusters are expected to have capacities ranging from 25 to 100 kilotons per year and are projected to commence operations in 2027. Additionally, the North Sulawesi Green Ammonia Cluster aims for a capacity of 500 kilotons per year by 2030, while the Sumatra-Java Blue Ammonia Project is designed with a 730 kilotons per year capacity. Deputy Minister Jodi Mahardi emphasized Indonesia's substantial geothermal potential, ranking second globally, and its solar power capacity exceeding 200 GW. He noted that the global hydrogen demand is anticipated to significantly increase, presenting lucrative opportunities for Indonesia to contribute to this market. The investments in clean hydrogen projects worldwide have already reached US$570 billion, demonstrating the sector's potential for growth.
