The car-free village of Quinten SG in Switzerland is undertaking a groundbreaking project by initiating the construction of a hydrogen-powered lake cab. This initiative, aimed at enhancing access to the village, marks the first commercial utilization of hydrogen propulsion technology on a Swiss lake. The Canton of St. Gallen is actively supporting the project, emphasizing its technical feasibility which was confirmed in a recent press release. The upcoming catamaran, designed to accommodate up to twelve passengers, will be operated by Schiffsbetrieb Walensee AG. Notably, the hydrogen required for operation will be produced using electricity derived from hydropower, aligning with sustainable practices. The regional development agency of the Canton of St. Gallen has played a pivotal role in financing and supporting the project as part of the federal government's regional policy initiative. Quinten, currently accessible solely by foot or water, aims to enhance its appeal as a residential destination through the introduction of the innovative lake cab. President of the 'Quinten lebt' foundation, Joël Schmid, highlighted the anticipated costs of the project, estimated to be in the range of several hundred thousand francs. This endeavor exemplifies a forward-thinking approach towards sustainable transportation and regional development in Switzerland.
