Air Liquide S.A. has been granted €110 million by the European Innovation Fund for its ENHANCE project in Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, aimed at producing low-carbon and renewable hydrogen from ammonia. The project intends to retrofit one of Air Liquide's hydrogen production units to use renewable ammonia instead of natural gas, in addition to constructing a hydrogen liquefier. This initiative is significant as it will help in decarbonizing various industries like refineries, chemicals, and heavy-duty transport by reducing over 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. By leveraging ammonia cracking and hydrogen liquefaction technologies, Air Liquide aims to support the expansion of the global hydrogen market and develop a sustainable hydrogen supply chain in Europe. The project aligns with Air Liquide's commitment to energy transition and carbon neutrality, contributing to European goals for a low-carbon future. Ammonia, produced with a low-carbon footprint in regions with abundant renewable energy sources, offers a promising solution for large-scale renewable hydrogen production, leveraging existing global supply chain infrastructure for various industries.
