BMW is embracing the shift towards greener transportation with its iX5 Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. This innovative model aims to offer a cleaner alternative to traditional electric cars by using hydrogen as its power source. While some critics doubt the feasibility of hydrogen on a large scale, BMW is confident in its technology. The iX5 Hydrogen features a unique powertrain that includes carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic tanks to store hydrogen, allowing for quick refueling times of less than five minutes. Unlike electric vehicles, the hydrogen-powered model's range remains unaffected by temperature variations, making it a practical option for various climates. Additionally, the only by-product of the fuel cell is water, contributing to its eco-friendly appeal. During a test drive at the Lang Lang proving ground in Melbourne, the iX5 Hydrogen impressed with its smooth and silent operation, delivering instant torque similar to an electric vehicle. However, there were noted concerns about the acceleration capabilities of the prototype. BMW is actively testing its hydrogen technology globally, with a decision on potential production models expected by the end of 2024.
