In Vietnam, experts and scholars are actively discussing the challenges and opportunities surrounding the increased use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the country. The lack of a robust legal framework for LNG imports-exports and LNG-fueled power plants has been a central point of concern. Dinh Trong Thinh, a lecturer at the Vietnam Finance Academy, has underlined the necessity for Vietnam to establish a comprehensive legal foundation encompassing technical standards, commercial regulations, and financial frameworks to instill confidence in both international and private investors looking to engage in LNG-powered projects. This move is seen as vital for the successful development of multi-billion dollar LNG ventures in the nation. Notably, Nguyen Huu Luong, an expert from the Vietnam Oil and Gas Institute, highlighted four key trends in LNG development that Vietnam should prioritize. These include small-scale LNG projects, carbon-neutral LNG initiatives focusing on emission reduction, the adoption of co-firing technology to enhance environmental sustainability, and the emerging trend of blue-hydrogen production. The shift towards small-scale LNG production, carbon-neutral practices, co-firing techniques, and blue-hydrogen development signifies a strategic and innovative approach by Vietnam to diversify its energy portfolio and address environmental concerns in the LNG industry.
