Airbus has launched the GOLIAT project to demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing liquid hydrogen in aviation ground operations. With funding from the EU's Horizon Europe Programme, the project aims to conduct small-scale liquid hydrogen aircraft operations at three European airports. The adoption of liquid hydrogen in aviation is seen as a crucial step towards decarbonizing the industry and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Airbus Vice President, Karine Guenan, highlighted the potential of hydrogen as a fuel for short-haul aviation, emphasizing its importance for the future. Liquid hydrogen is recognized for its clean and efficient properties, offering a promising solution to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in airport operations. The GOLIAT project involves a consortium of ten partners from eight countries and will focus on developing technologies for high-flow liquid hydrogen refueling at airports. Over the course of four years, the project will address challenges related to safety, scalability, standardization, and economic viability of liquid hydrogen operations. By exploring these aspects, the project aims to pave the way for widespread adoption of liquid hydrogen in the aviation industry, supporting sustainable and low-carbon aviation practices in the future.
