ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels, Emphasizing Safety for Hydrogen-Powered Ships
Key Ideas
  • ClassNK releases updated guidelines including requirements for hydrogen-powered ships to enhance safety measures.
  • The guidelines cover installation, controls, and safety devices to minimize risks to ships, seafarers, and the environment.
  • ClassNK also issued an Approval in Principle for YANMAR Power Technology's 300kW maritime hydrogen fuel cell system, the first of its kind by a Japanese manufacturer.
ClassNK, a classification society, has released the third edition of its 'Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels,' now including specific requirements for hydrogen-powered ships. The updated guidelines focus on enhancing safety measures for ships utilizing alternative fuels, with a significant emphasis on hydrogen. The guidelines cover aspects such as installation, controls, and safety devices to reduce risks to ships, crew members, and the environment. ClassNK has introduced additional safety requirements tailored to the unique physical properties and associated hazards of hydrogen fuel, particularly focusing on preventing explosions caused by its high ignition potential and leakage risks. In a statement, ClassNK expressed its commitment to supporting the adoption of alternative-fuelled ships by providing necessary safety requirements and design guidance. Earlier this year, ClassNK granted an Approval in Principle to YANMAR Power Technology for its 300kW maritime hydrogen fuel cell system, marking a milestone as the first certification of its kind for a Japanese manufacturer. This certification aligns with ClassNK's 'Guidelines for Fuel Cell Power Systems on Board Ships 2,' tailored for YANMAR's hydrogen solution. Additionally, amidst the increasing interest in hydrogen as an alternative fuel, H2 View's 'Class of H2' offers training modules covering various aspects of hydrogen, catering to investors, start-ups, and individuals looking to deepen their knowledge in this field.
