With abundant solar, wind, and hydroelectric resources at its disposal, the region has the opportunity to emerge as a key player in the global clean hydrogen export market. Various countries in Latin America are forging unique pathways towards harnessing clean hydrogen. For instance, Argentina and Chile are aiming to be net hydrogen exporters, with Chile even eyeing the production of the world's most cost-effective green hydrogen by 2050. On the other hand, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico are focusing on local decarbonization, utilizing clean hydrogen to reduce emissions in challenging sectors. Meanwhile, Panama and Uruguay have set their sights on specific industries like maritime transport and trucking for clean hydrogen development. Despite these ambitions, countries face hurdles such as limited demand due to high prices, slow infrastructure growth, skill shortages, and absence of standards. To tackle these challenges, the report proposes a strategic roadmap encompassing technology advancements, standards implementation, market facilitation, and ensuring supply meets demand.
