The German government is implementing a draft hydrogen import strategy with a focus on diversified supply. The plan involves establishing import structures for green hydrogen from countries like Denmark, Norway, the UK, and the possibility of expanding to northern African countries through Italy. While the long-term goal is to import green hydrogen produced from renewable sources, the strategy also allows for low-carbon hydrogen, including that derived from natural gas with carbon capture and storage. To support this initiative, Germany is utilizing state support programs such as the H2Global import scheme and Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for infrastructure. Additionally, 'climate contracts' are being used to facilitate industry transformation towards a greener hydrogen supply system. The strategy emphasizes the importance of ensuring that imported hydrogen meets specific criteria related to social standards, sustainable water supply, land use, and enabling local value creation. To guarantee adherence to these standards, the government aims to establish an international certification system. Green hydrogen is recognized as essential for decarbonizing challenging sectors like steelmaking and the chemical industry. While local production will play a role, Germany acknowledges the need for imports to meet projected demand. Recently, Germany awarded a contract to import green ammonia from Egypt, indicating a step towards realizing its strategic vision for a sustainable hydrogen supply chain.
