The Indian government has taken a significant step towards revolutionizing the use of green hydrogen in the country by introducing pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects aim to explore the utilization of hydrogen in buses and trucks, with a focus on developing commercially viable technologies and supporting infrastructure like hydrogen refueling stations. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has sanctioned five pilot projects involving 37 vehicles and 9 hydrogen refueling stations. Companies such as TATA Motors, Reliance Industries Limited, and NTPC are among the key players in these projects. These initiatives, with a total financial support of around Rs. 208 Crore, are expected to be operational within the next 18-24 months, paving the way for the scalability of hydrogen technologies in India. The projects will evaluate the safety, effectiveness, technical feasibility, and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refueling stations under real-world conditions. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 at a cost of Rs 19,744 crores up to 2029-30, aligns with India's goal of achieving self-reliance through clean energy and will serve as a model for the global Clean Energy Transition.
