Wienerberger Zrt., an innovative company in the ceramics industry, conducted a groundbreaking industrial-scale experiment at its factory in Tiszavasvár, Hungary. The company, with a vision for climate neutrality, aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality in its production processes within 30 years by incorporating hydrogen. To achieve this, Wienerberger Zrt. formed a long-term partnership with experts from the University of Miskolc. The joint project focuses on gradually replacing the fuel used in production with green hydrogen in brick and tile factories to lower CO2 emissions. In 2023, Wienerberger Zrt. launched a hydrogen combustion pilot project in collaboration with the University of Miskolc at the Tiszavasvár brick factory. The project, now considered pioneering in the ceramics industry, targets reducing CO2 emissions during brick production's drying and firing stages by substituting natural gas with hydrogen. The first phase of the pilot project, completed in April 2024, involved installing safety equipment, a bypass pipeline for hydrogen and natural gas mixing, and a control system. Hydrogen was sourced from tankers, allowing the replacement of 25% of natural gas with hydrogen during testing. Quality inspectors confirmed that the finished products maintained their quality standards despite the fuel change. Wienerberger Zrt.'s commitment to incorporating hydrogen in its production processes showcases its dedication to sustainability and reducing environmental impact. By successfully implementing hydrogen technology, the company sets an example for the ceramics industry in Hungary and beyond, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of transitioning to greener energy sources.
