Adani Total Gas Ltd, a joint venture between Adani Group and TotalEnergies, has launched a groundbreaking project in Ahmedabad by blending green hydrogen with natural gas. The initiative aims to reduce emissions and work towards achieving net-zero goals. Currently, 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen is being blended with piped natural gas for 4,000 consumers, with plans to increase to 5% and then 8%. This project is the largest of its kind in India, surpassing initiatives in Surat and Indore. CEO Suresh P Manglani sees this as a pivotal move towards decarbonization. Despite the benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy security, challenges like high production costs and pipeline corrosion persist. The project has shown that blending up to 10% hydrogen with natural gas is feasible. ATGL intends to expand this initiative to other parts of Ahmedabad and regions under its city gas licenses, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and a greener future.
