The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has given the green light to a new pilot projects scheme that centers on the production and use of green hydrogen in innovative ways. This initiative targets a wide range of applications, from residential to commercial and community-based, aiming to explore decentralized and non-traditional uses of green hydrogen. The scheme supports testing new models and technologies for generating green hydrogen, such as floating solar-based production, biomass-derived hydrogen, and hydrogen from wastewater. Special attention is given to utilizing green hydrogen as a fuel source in decentralized applications like cooking, heating, off-grid power generation, and off-road vehicles on a pilot basis. The primary focus is to evaluate the technical feasibility, safety, and reliability of green hydrogen for various household, residential, and commercial applications, including city gas services. By approving this scheme, the Ministry aims to validate the use of green hydrogen and its derivatives in new sectors, showcasing its potential as a sustainable fuel option in local and community settings. The implementation of these pilot projects will adhere to guidelines set by the Ministry, with funding allocated from the National Green Hydrogen Mission budget.
