Algeria's Green Hydrogen Project: A Step Towards Decarbonization
Key Ideas
- Cepsa and Sonatrach sign MoU for green hydrogen project in Algeria to supply European market.
- Project to be implemented in two phases focusing on feasibility study and project development.
- Integrated project includes electrolysis hydrogen production, renewable energy plants, and methanol/green ammonia production facilities.
- Aims to contribute to decarbonization goals of both companies through the use of renewable energy sources.
Cepsa and Sonatrach have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct a feasibility study for a green hydrogen project in Algeria. The project, aimed at supplying the European market, involves the development of an integrated system for green hydrogen production and derivatives. The signing ceremony, held in Oran, was attended by key officials and executives from both companies. The project will be implemented in two phases, with the first phase focusing on assessing feasibility and profitability, while the second phase will involve project development. The plan includes the construction of an electrolysis hydrogen production plant, along with solar and wind plants to provide renewable energy for the electrolyzers. Additionally, a methanol and/or green ammonia production facility will be established, along with storage and transportation infrastructure. The overall goal of the project is to support the decarbonization objectives of Cepsa and Sonatrach by utilizing renewable energy sources in the production process.
