AM Green and GAIL Partnership for Sustainable Energy Transition in India
Key Ideas
  • AM Green BV and GAIL (India) Limited collaborate on hybrid renewable energy projects totaling 2.5GW across India, focusing on eMethanol production and CO2 utilization.
  • The partnership aims to supply 350 KTA of CO2 for eMethanol production, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a circular economy.
  • AM Green's green ammonia production targets align with India's Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming for 5 MTPA capacity by 2030, contributing significantly to India and Europe's green hydrogen goals.
  • GAIL's equity option in the eMethanol project strengthens the strategic partnership, supporting sustainable energy solutions and advancing India's transition to a greener energy landscape.
AM Green BV (AMG) and GAIL (India) Limited have teamed up to explore hybrid renewable energy projects in India, with a focus on solar and wind power totaling 2.5GW. The collaboration also involves the long-term supply of carbon dioxide (CO2) for these projects, alongside eMethanol production and exploration across the country. The partnership aims to utilize around 350 kilotonnes per annum (KTA) of CO2 from GAIL's gas processing plants to produce eMethanol, an environmentally friendly fuel that can help reduce carbon emissions and promote a circular economy. GAIL will also have the opportunity to invest in the eMethanol project, ensuring a strategic alliance that supports sustainable energy solutions. These projects, along with Greenko's pump storage initiatives, are set to provide continuous power supply, including for the eMethanol project. The production of green methanol is seen as a key step in decarbonizing sectors such as shipping, steel, and cement. Furthermore, AM Green's plans for green ammonia production across various Indian locations align with the country's goal of achieving 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia capacity by 2030. This capacity is equivalent to 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, contributing significantly to India's National Green Hydrogen Mission targets and a portion of Europe's green hydrogen import goals. This partnership signifies a positive step towards a sustainable energy transition in India, reducing carbon footprint and fostering a greener energy landscape for the future.
