Swiss fertilizer producer and trader Ameropa and Indian company Hygenco Green Energies have joined forces to potentially supply green ammonia from Hygenco's upcoming plant in India. The partnership's primary objective is to boost green ammonia exports from India, aiding the global transition to renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices. Hygenco's project at the Gopalpur port in Odisha aims to initially produce 600 short tons/day by 2027, increasing to 1.1 million tons/year by 2030. This expansion includes plans to double output to 1,200 tonnes/day by early 2028. Hygenco's investment in green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, totaling $2.5 billion over three years, showcases their commitment to low-carbon initiatives. With India targeting 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, the country could emerge as a significant green ammonia exporter. Ameropa sees this collaboration as fundamental in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, developing low-impact fertilizers, and reducing indirect emissions. Ameropa's Head of Ammonia, Beat Ruprecht, expressed the company's support for Hygenco's plans, emphasizing the focus on a global portfolio of low-carbon ammonia. This strategic partnership not only highlights India's potential for global leadership in the green ammonia sector but also underscores the importance of leveraging renewable resources and robust infrastructure.
