Key Ideas
- Atome signs a $465m EPC contract with Casale for a 145MW green hydrogen-based fertiliser project in Villeta, Paraguay.
- The project will produce 260,000 tonnes of green calcium ammonium nitrate using green hydrogen produced through electrolysis.
- Casale aims to deliver a design that ensures competitive production costs compared to conventional fertilisers.
- Yara has agreed to offtake 100% of the plant's output, and Hy24 is set to invest $115m depending on contract agreements.
Atome has finalized a $465m engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with Swiss firm Casale for a green hydrogen-based fertiliser project in Villeta, Paraguay. The project, expected to reach full capacity at 260,000 tonnes of green calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), will utilize green hydrogen as a key feedstock, produced through electrolysis with hydropower. The construction timeline is estimated at around 38 months, with an anticipated final investment decision (FID) by mid-2025. Casale's CEO Frederico Zardi expressed confidence in delivering a design that will establish a new standard for sustainable fertiliser production costs. Atome's CEO, Olivier Mussat, highlighted the significance of the EPC contract in progressing towards FID, emphasizing the project's role as a pioneer in their green fertiliser development platform. Yara and Hy24 are also key partners in the project, with Yara committed to offtaking the entire output and Hy24 potentially investing $115m based on contract and agreement finalizations. The project aligns with the global shift towards sustainable agriculture and green energy, marking a positive step in the industry's transition.
