Barbados is taking significant steps towards sustainable energy and green hydrogen innovation by collaborating with Swedish wave energy company Seabased. The Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) and Seabased Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a wave energy park with the purpose of supporting Barbados' green hydrogen research and development. This initiative comes as Barbados aims to lead the Caribbean region in transitioning to green hydrogen. The MoU outlines plans to build a 2 MW pilot wave energy park, with intentions to expand to 10 MW or more to assist the BIDC's green hydrogen facility. The CEO of BIDC, Mark Hill, emphasized the importance of exploring innovative solutions to drive energy transitions for island nations like Barbados. The move towards green hydrogen is motivated by the island's heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and the vulnerability to climate risks such as rising sea levels and hurricanes. In collaboration with Seabased and Wavepiston, Barbados is demonstrating a commitment to diversifying its energy sources and promoting sustainable development. Seabased CEO Laurent Albert highlighted the potential of utilizing renewable ocean energy without disrupting key industries like tourism. The collaboration also extends to exploring the deployment of wave energy farms off the coast of Barbados. This partnership signifies a progressive shift towards cleaner energy sources and a more resilient energy infrastructure for Barbados and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
