Belgium is making significant strides in the green hydrogen sector with the construction of the Hyoffwind plant in Zeebrugge, the country's first green hydrogen facility. Scheduled for completion by 2026, the plant is a collaboration between Messer, Virya Energy, and Hyoffgreen, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually. Alongside this, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are forging partnerships to use green hydrogen in refineries in Antwerp, Zeeland, and Rotterdam. These agreements are set to have a substantial impact, reducing CO₂ emissions by 450,000 tonnes at Belgian and Dutch refineries by 2029. The projects include building a 250 MW electrolyser near TotalEnergies' Zeeland refinery and producing 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Moreover, additional green hydrogen production near Rotterdam will supply the Antwerp refinery, further cutting emissions by 150,000 tonnes. These endeavors are crucial for Europe's decarbonisation strategy, signaling a shift towards cleaner energy sources and positioning green hydrogen as a key player in the region's low-carbon transition. Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele emphasized the necessity of such projects in achieving decarbonisation goals and expanding the green hydrogen economy.
