Blastr Green Steel and Primetals Technologies Join Forces for Hydrogen-based Steel Production in Finland
Key Ideas
  • Primetals Technologies and Midrex Technologies to develop a 100% hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant for Blastr Green Steel in Finland.
  • The hydrogen DRI plant is set to produce low-carbon steel and enable decarbonisation of value chains for Blastr's customers.
  • Blastr's green steel plant in Inkoo, Finland, is expected to start production by the end of 2026, incorporating advanced technology for autonomous operations and occupational safety.
  • The collaboration aims to position Blastr as a significant player in decarbonising European iron and steelmaking through hydrogen-based production.
Blastr Green Steel has partnered with Primetals Technologies and Midrex Technologies to establish a 100% hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Inkoo, Finland. This collaboration aims to support Blastr's steel facility, projected to produce 2.5 million tonnes of low-carbon steel annually. The hydrogen DRI plant, powered by green hydrogen, will supply hot DRI and hot briquetted iron (HBI) to the steel mill, fostering decarbonisation in the steel industry. Blastr's CEO, Mark Bula, expressed enthusiasm for driving innovation and shaping the future of steel production through this partnership. The planned green steel plant in Finland is expected to begin operations by the end of 2026, leveraging digitalisation, robot technology, and autonomous solutions for optimized production processes and enhanced safety. Additionally, the collaboration is poised to position Blastr as a key player in the decarbonisation of European iron and steelmaking. This initiative signifies a significant step towards sustainable steel production and highlights the growing trend towards hydrogen-based technologies in the industry.
