Cadiz Ranch to Host California's Largest Green Hydrogen Facility
Key Ideas
  • Cadiz and RIC Energy have agreed to build California's largest green hydrogen facility at Cadiz Ranch in the Mojave Desert.
  • The facility will utilize solar energy to produce industrial quantities of 100% green hydrogen for zero-emission trucks, cars, and electric generation in Southern California markets.
  • Plans include an integrated, off-grid production facility powered by photovoltaic solar on up to 3,000 acres of land, with water supplied by Cadiz for hydrogen production.
  • The project is expected to create over 200,000 green jobs in California and generate $2.95B per year in economic value starting in 2030, contributing to clean energy goals and reducing pollution.
Cadiz and RIC Energy have inked a deal to construct California's largest green hydrogen facility at Cadiz Ranch in the Mojave Desert. The agreement involves Cadiz providing land and water to RIC Energy for the production of industrial quantities of 100% green hydrogen using solar power. This initiative aims to supply green hydrogen to the Southern California market for zero-emission transportation and electricity generation, facilitated by rail lines, pipelines, and highways. The project, spanning 3,000 acres, will integrate state-of-the-art green hydrogen production technologies, compliant with strict regulations, and utilizing on-site water resources and renewable solar energy. Cadiz will allocate up to 500 acre-feet of water annually for hydrogen production, which will also power its own operations sustainably. The facility is projected to manufacture 50,000 kilograms of hydrogen daily, catering to various industries currently dependent on fossil hydrogen. Additionally, the site will feature electricity storage and infrastructure for hydrogen transportation. The strategic location at Cadiz presents opportunities for potential hydrogen pipelines to serve the Los Angeles region and for blending hydrogen with natural gas. The project aligns with California's clean energy targets, aiming to deliver 90% clean electricity by 2035. Notably, the endeavor is forecasted to create a significant economic impact, generating over 200,000 green jobs and $2.95 billion annually from 2030 onwards, while also contributing to health and environmental benefits by reducing pollution.
