DEWA's Green Hydrogen Project Revolutionizes Energy Production in Dubai
Key Ideas
  • DEWA's Green Hydrogen project in Dubai has successfully produced 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, utilizing solar energy for production.
  • The project has prevented around 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and generated over one gigawatt hour of green energy.
  • Future plans include expanding the solar park's capacity to 5,000 MW by 2030, aligning with the UAE's goal to secure a significant share of the low-carbon hydrogen market.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has achieved a significant milestone by producing 90 tonnes of green hydrogen through its pioneering Green Hydrogen project. This initiative, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, harnesses solar energy for hydrogen production. With a production rate of 20 kilograms per hour, the project has storage for up to 12 hours and utilizes electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. The generated hydrogen is then used to produce electricity through a hydrogen gas motor, with a capacity of approximately 300 kilowatts. By 2030, DEWA aims to expand the solar park's production capacity to over 5,000 MW, contributing to competitive pricing in green hydrogen production. This aligns with the UAE's target to secure 25% of the low-carbon hydrogen market and supports key national strategies, including the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. Moreover, the project paves the way for future applications of hydrogen in various sectors like transportation and industry, reinforcing Dubai's global standing in renewable energy solutions. DEWA's Green Hydrogen project not only signifies a step towards sustainability but also showcases Dubai's commitment to clean energy and environmental conservation.
