Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, led the inauguration of a National Consultation Workshop on Green Hydrogen, focusing on attracting investments in the sector. The event, organized by the European Union as part of the MED GEM initiative, gathered key stakeholders from the Egyptian government and international organizations to discuss the potential of green hydrogen in Egypt's energy transition.
Al-Mashat emphasized the crucial role of green hydrogen in addressing climate change and decarbonizing industries such as heavy manufacturing, maritime transportation, and aviation. She positioned green hydrogen as a cornerstone of a low-carbon economy, essential for enhancing energy security and achieving sustainable development goals. With the Green Hydrogen Incentives Law No. 2 of 2024, Egypt aims to create a conducive regulatory environment to attract investments and drive technological advancements, with a target to secure 8% of the global hydrogen market share by 2040.
Egypt boasts strengths in green hydrogen production, including ample solar and wind resources, advanced infrastructure, and a strategic location for exporting to global markets. Al-Mashat stressed the importance of international partnerships, especially with the European Union, highlighting the joint commitment to clean energy and sustainability as seen in the Memorandum of Understanding signed at COP27.
The workshop serves as a foundation for a long-term strategic collaboration in the green hydrogen sector, with its outcomes shaping strategies for industry growth in the forthcoming EU-Egypt Green Hydrogen Investment Forum. Despite the positive outlook, challenges such as regulatory refinements, infrastructure development, public-private partnerships, and technology transfer collaborations are identified as areas needing attention for the sustainable advancement of green hydrogen in Egypt.
