Germany and Morocco have agreed to form a climate and energy alliance to boost green hydrogen production. With Germany's focus on transitioning to hydrogen as a clean energy source for hard-to-electrify sectors, the alliance aims to support Morocco in harnessing its potential for green hydrogen production. This collaboration is crucial for Germany, which plans to import a significant portion of its future hydrogen demand to achieve climate neutrality. The partnership emphasizes fair and sustainable development, ensuring that both countries benefit from the value chains of the future. The alliance between Germany and Morocco also involves promoting electricity trading cooperation between Morocco and the European Union. This partnership will facilitate the involvement of German technology companies in advancing the hydrogen economy in Morocco. Furthermore, Germany has already committed substantial financial support to Morocco, including funding for renewable energy projects like the world's largest solar thermal power plant in Ouarzazate. The solar thermal power plant, partly funded by Germany, is set to produce green hydrogen, contributing to the production of green steel. The alliance anticipates starting production between 2028 and 2029, with plans to initiate an international tender process for off-takers this year. Discussions will also focus on the transportation of green hydrogen and its products to Germany and Europe, highlighting the strategic importance of the alliance for the sustainable development of both countries.
