The shipping industry is taking significant steps towards decarbonization by accelerating the adoption of zero-emission fuels, including green hydrogen. Over 50 stakeholders across the shipping value chain have signed a Call to Action at the UN Climate Change Conference to push for faster and bolder action in transitioning to zero-emission fuels, investing in zero-emission vessels, and developing green hydrogen infrastructure. To align with a 1.5 C pathway, global green hydrogen production must double by 2030, necessitating the uptake of at least 5 million mt of green hydrogen in the shipping sector. The Call to Action emphasizes the need for coordinated action across the supply chain, investment in hydrogen-derived fuel infrastructure at ports, and bridging the cost gap between fossil fuels and scalable zero-emission fuels. The International Maritime Organization is working towards setting a global fuel standard and greenhouse gas pricing mechanism by 2025 to achieve net-zero emissions in the maritime sector by 2050, in line with its 2023 GHG Strategy. The industry is committed to reducing CO2 emissions per transport work by at least 40% by 2030 and reaching net-zero GHG emissions by around 2050. The Call to Action sets the stage for regulatory developments and investments in green hydrogen infrastructure to propel the shipping sector towards a sustainable and environmentally-friendly future.
