SwitcH2 has announced a partnership with CorPower Ocean to establish an industrial-scale floating green ammonia production facility that will leverage wave energy for sustainable operations starting in 2029. This initiative, supported by notable investors including BW Offshore and Dutch Oceans Capital, aims to develop offshore production units for green hydrogen and green ammonia using proven FPSO technologies. The project, partially funded by the Dutch Government, will see the incorporation of wave energy alongside wind and solar sources to enhance the supply of green electricity. In collaboration with CorPower Ocean's wave energy technology, SwitcH2 plans to launch an open-sea project in northern Portugal to produce green ammonia through a large-scale electrolysis plant on a specially built vessel. The output, green ammonia, will be stored and exported ashore, with the facility targeting an annual production capacity of nearly 300 ktonne. The green ammonia market is expected to witness significant growth, reaching $55bn by 2032, with green ammonia being identified as a key fuel for decarbonizing the shipping industry. SwitcH2's Director highlighted the economic benefits of integrating wave energy and the potential to contribute to decarbonizing challenging sectors like global shipping. CorPower Ocean's Commercial Director emphasized the stability and reliability of wave energy in supporting clean energy production. SwitcH2's expansion plans include projects in West Africa for ammonia export and in the Dutch sector of the North Sea for hydrogen export, aligning with the company's ambitious gigawatt-scale goals. The mobility of the floating production system enables deployment in regions with cost-effective renewable energy sources, marking a step towards sustainable energy production on a global scale.
