The state of Hesse in Germany has revealed ambitious plans for a 280-kilometer hydrogen network, costing up to €300 million, to bolster the region's and the nation's climate objectives. The network will interconnect with Germany's national hydrogen infrastructure, facilitating the growth of a green hydrogen economy. Spanning Hesse, the network will be linked to national hydrogen routes through pipelines like H2ercules and Werne-Eisenach Line. The project underscores the necessity for localized distribution to maximize hydrogen's potential as a clean energy source. A coalition of 15 regional gas network operators, potentially including major players like Open Grid Europe and Terranets bw GmbH, has spearheaded the initiative, focusing on Northern and Central Hesse. Feasibility studies have identified a pipeline corridor from Lahntal to Kassel, blending new and repurposed gas pipelines to minimize costs. The studies highlight a significant industrial demand for green hydrogen in Hesse, stressing the need for a reliable supply network. This regional effort aligns with Germany's national strategy to establish a 9,040-kilometer hydrogen core network, recently approved by the Federal Network Agency. The core network aims to connect import terminals to industrial hubs, with Hesse's network seamlessly integrating into this framework. The German government sees the core network as pivotal for the energy transition, ensuring security for hydrogen producers, power plants, and industrial users. Kaweh Mansoori, the Hessian Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, lauded the project as a step to secure hydrogen supply in the region, expressing gratitude to the network operators for their commitment.
