Green Hydrogen Infrastructure Project to Power Thames Estuary Industries
Key Ideas
  • Lloyd’s Register partners with H2Terminals, HiDROGEN, and D3IM to evaluate the feasibility of a green hydrogen infrastructure project in the UK.
  • The project involves offshore generation of green hydrogen through wind, wave, and solar energy, to be transported to businesses in the Thames Estuary and River area.
  • Plans include converting green hydrogen into its liquid state for transportation by ship, and subsequent conversion into electricity and hot water on floating barges.
  • The initiative aligns with the Thames Estuary Growth Board action plan, aiming to attract investment, create jobs, and develop a sustainable logistics network in the region.
Lloyd’s Register has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with H2Terminals, HiDROGEN, and D3IM to explore the feasibility of a green hydrogen infrastructure project in the UK. The collaboration aims to assess the viability of floating production and transport of green hydrogen, along with identifying regulatory requirements for offshore infrastructure development. The proposed project includes an offshore island equipped with wind, wave, and solar energy facilities located 100 km offshore to generate green hydrogen. This hydrogen will be converted into liquid form, transported by ships to a terminal near London, and then further processed on floating barges to produce electricity and hot water. In addition to energy production, byproducts such as liquid nitrogen and oxygen will be created during this conversion process. Batteries on the barges will store the electricity during transportation. The project also involves the development and qualification of various assets including containment systems for storing liquid hydrogen at extremely low temperatures. The initiative, part of the private sector-led Thames Estuary Growth Board action plan, aims to attract investment and promote sustainable growth in the region. Key stakeholders believe that this ambitious project will contribute to the decarbonization of supply chains, create jobs, and drive economic growth in the area. The partners involved in the project express their commitment to supporting the UK government's goals for low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, highlighting the potential of green hydrogen to transform the energy landscape.
