Green Hydrogen Refuelling Station Revolutionizes Heavy Transport at Port of Gothenburg
Key Ideas
  • The Port of Gothenburg opened a hydrogen refuelling station near a heavily trafficked gate, catering to trucks and work machinery.
  • Situated strategically, the station is part of Sweden's transition to green hydrogen for heavy land transport, complementing existing electric charging stations.
  • Hydri aims to establish around 20 hydrogen stations by 2025 in Sweden, with the first station at the port being partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
  • The CEO of Qarlbo Energy mentioned the station's significant role in driving carbon-neutral transport, emphasizing the potential of green hydrogen in heavy transport.
The Port of Gothenburg has inaugurated a new hydrogen refuelling station near one of its busiest gates, focusing on heavy traffic including trucks and work machinery. This strategic location, adjacent to Gate 6 of the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, caters to the high volume of vehicles passing through, with plans for increased traffic in the future. The station, exclusively offering green hydrogen, is operated by Hydri, a company with ambitions to establish a network of around 20 hydrogen stations in Sweden by 2025. The initiative to introduce green hydrogen for heavy land transport is seen as a significant step towards a carbon-neutral transport sector. Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the port, highlighted the ideal positioning of the station and its synergy with existing electric charging facilities at the port. With Stena Line's terminals expected to relocate nearby, the importance of sustainable fuel options like green hydrogen is set to grow in the region. Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and Hydri's Board Chairman, expressed optimism about green hydrogen's potential to drive the transition to carbon-neutral transport, positioning the new refuelling station as a crucial part of this evolution.
