Iberdrola and BP Begin Construction on Spain's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant
Key Ideas
- Iberdrola and BP have commenced the construction of Spain's largest green hydrogen plant in Castellón.
- The 25MW plant, costing €70 million, will involve 25 Spanish companies in its construction.
- The electrolyser will be powered by renewable electricity and is expected to produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
- Funding for the project has been secured from various support programs within the Spanish Recovery Plan and the EU's NextGenerationEU.
Spanish energy company Iberdrola and oil giant BP have initiated the construction of what is said to be Spain's largest green hydrogen plant. The plant, located next to BP's refinery in Castellón, spans a 20,000 sq m area. The construction process, starting in the second quarter of the year, will involve adapting the land and assembling the main equipment in the latter half of the year. With an investment of €70 million, the 25MW electrolyser will be powered by renewable electricity sourced from Iberdrola's photovoltaic and wind farms. Upon its completion in the second half of 2026, the plant is expected to generate 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The project has received financial support totaling €15 million from programs like the Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge, under Spain's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, with contributions from the EU's NextGenerationEU. Additionally, the Instituto Tecnológico de la Energía (ITE) is also involved in the project.
