IIT Kanpur and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels in Kanpur, India. This initiative aims to advance biofuel production in the country by focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. The collaborative research between the two institutions will primarily target the production of Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG, Aviation Fuel, and Green Hydrogen from renewable biomass sources. With Uttar Pradesh's strong agricultural base and sugarcane production, the region is deemed ideal for biofuel research. The partnership intends to combine the market experience and technological expertise of NSI Kanpur with the scientific knowledge of IIT Kanpur to position India as a leader in biofuel technology. The joint efforts will align with the National Bio-fuel policy, 2018, promoting ethanol production from various feedstocks. The establishment of a dedicated building with cutting-edge laboratory facilities at NSI Kanpur will facilitate the development of pilot projects and innovative technologies in biofuels. This collaboration not only contributes to energy security but also aids in environmental preservation, reducing CO2 emissions, and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
