Union Minister Pralhad Joshi recently launched India’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials in New Delhi. This initiative falls in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, showcasing India’s dedication to promoting clean mobility and ensuring energy security. Hydrogen-powered trucks operate using fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity, providing a zero-emission solution in comparison to traditional diesel-powered transportation. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Limited, is spearheading this project. These trucks offer several key advantages such as zero carbon emissions, longer driving ranges, quick refueling times, and deployment on specific routes like Faridabad–Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad–Surat–Vadodara. Indian Oil Corporation Limited is also establishing hydrogen refueling stations in cities like Faridabad, Vadodara, Pune, and Balasore. In addition to promoting sustainable transport, the introduction of hydrogen-powered trucks plays a crucial role in enhancing India’s energy security by decreasing the country's reliance on oil imports. This initiative is a significant component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s Hydrogen Mobility Initiative aimed at fostering a cleaner transportation sector. By aligning with the government's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, India is taking substantial steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
