India Launches SIGHT Programme to Boost Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
- India aims to expand its green hydrogen production capacity to 450,000 TPA under the SIGHT Programme.
- The programme includes incentives for both biomass-based and technology-agnostic pathways.
- Solar Energy Corporation of India will oversee the implementation and bidding process.
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission is part of India's goal to achieve self-reliance through clean energy by 2030.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has announced the guidelines for the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme - Component II. This initiative, known as the Incentive Scheme for Green Hydrogen Production, aims to significantly increase the country's green hydrogen production capacity. The target capacity for this program is set at 450,000 tonnes per annum (TPA), with a portion allocated to biomass-based pathways and the rest to technology-agnostic pathways. The bidding process will be based on the least average incentive quoted by the bidder, with specific capacity ranges for different pathways. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with substantial funding, is a key part of India's strategy to achieve self-reliance through clean energy by 2030. Overall, the SIGHT Programme and the Green Hydrogen Mission demonstrate India's commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices and reducing carbon emissions.
