Indian Government Approves Hydrogen Pilot Projects for Green Steel Production
Key Ideas
  • The Indian government has sanctioned three pilot projects in steel production that will utilize hydrogen, receiving financial support of Rs 347 crore.
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy anticipates the projects to launch within the next three years as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The selected consortiums and SAIL will implement pilot projects aimed at demonstrating the feasibility and viability of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes for low-carbon production.
  • These initiatives seek to reduce coal/coke consumption in steel production and evaluate the economic viability of implementing hydrogen in various steel-making processes.
The Indian government has approved three pilot projects to utilize hydrogen in steel production as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and two consortiums have been selected to receive a total of Rs 347 crore in financial support for implementing these projects. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy expects these pilot projects to be operational within the next three years. The selected consortiums include Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, as well as Simplex Castings, with projects ranging from 40 to 3,200 tonnes-per-day capacity. These projects aim to demonstrate the safe and secure operations of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes, validate technical feasibility and performance, and assess the economic viability of transitioning to low-carbon iron and steel production. The initiatives also focus on reducing coal/coke consumption in steel production through methods like injecting hydrogen in vertical shaft-based DRI making units. Overall, this move signifies a positive step towards incorporating hydrogen into the steel production sector for more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
