India is setting ambitious targets in the green hydrogen space, with plans to achieve a production capacity of 5 megatonnes annually by 2030, later increasing to 10Mt. The focus extends beyond ammonia production to sectors like petroleum refining, steelmaking, derivative fuels, and city gas distribution, with an aim to export hydrogen in the future. In a significant development, India recently signed an agreement with Japan for green hydrogen export, signaling a step towards international collaboration in clean energy. The green hydrogen initiative has also launched a $25 million tender to establish testing facilities, infrastructure, and institutional support for developing green hydrogen standards and regulatory frameworks, including 'world class' testing facilities in India. The country's new and renewable energy minister, Shri Pralhad Joshi, emphasized the government's strong support for the renewable energy sector, highlighting the vast renewable energy potential in India. Joshi announced plans to introduce incentives for indigenous electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production, with a vision of India becoming a key player in green hydrogen exports. Additionally, a strategic intervention program, the Sight programme, has been launched to support the transition to green hydrogen, focusing on demand creation, de-risking finance, and equitable resource utilization.
