India's First Green Hydrogen-Powered Steel Plant Revolutionizes Sustainable Steel Production
Key Ideas
  • Gensol Engineering partners with Matrix Gas & Renewables to develop India's first Green Steel production facility using 100% Green Hydrogen, a groundbreaking initiative in sustainable steel production.
  • The project is sanctioned under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and supported by the Ministry of Steel and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, showcasing significant technological advancement in the sector.
  • The facility's innovative DRI vertical shaft technology will convert iron ore into sponge iron, replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen to eliminate CO₂ emissions, setting a new standard for clean iron production.
  • With a total capital expenditure of Rs 321 crore and 50% capex incentives from the Government of India, the project aims to promote sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions in the steel industry, signaling a shared commitment towards sustainability.
Gensol Engineering has forged a partnership with Matrix Gas & Renewables to establish India's initial Green Steel production plant powered by 100% Green Hydrogen, a pioneering feat in sustainable steel manufacturing. This move comes as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission's sanction of three pilot projects aimed at advancing sustainable steel production in India. The facility's estimated capital expenditure stands at Rs 321 crore, with the Government of India extending 50% capex incentives to bolster this transformative endeavor. By leveraging direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology tailored for Indian-grade ore, the plant will convert iron ore into sponge iron without relying on fossil fuels, thereby eradicating CO₂ emissions. Matrix Gas & Renewables will lead the project's execution, collaborating with Gensol Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB (Sweden) to oversee construction, design, and operations. With a daily capacity of 50 tons, this pilot plant will pave the way for future Green Steel plants catering to medium- to small-scale producers in various regions of India. Through this strategic collaboration and innovative approach, the project aims to spearhead a transformative shift towards cleaner and more sustainable steel production practices, aligning with the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly industrial processes.
