Key Ideas
  • Jindal Renewables and JSPL signed an MOU to implement India's largest green hydrogen project in the steel sector.
  • The project aims to develop a green hydrogen capacity of 4,500 tons per annum, reducing carbon footprint and enhancing sustainability.
  • JSPL plans to integrate green hydrogen into its DRI units in Angul, Odisha, with operations expected to start by December 2025.
  • This initiative marks a significant step towards low emission steel production and reducing the steelmaker's reliance on coal-fired energy.
Jindal Renewables, promoted by Navin Jindal, and Jindal Steel (JSPL) have announced a partnership to launch India's biggest green hydrogen project in the steel sector. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlines the plan to integrate green hydrogen into JSPL's Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) units in Angul, Odisha. With an initial phase targeting a green hydrogen generation capacity of 4,500 tons per annum, operations are set to begin by December 2025. In addition, the project will also supply 36,000 tons of oxygen annually to support the Angul steelworks. Jindal Renewables will further provide 3GW of renewable energy to JSPL's facilities, aiming to reduce the steelmaker's coal energy dependency by 50% in the next 2-3 years. Sanjay Singh, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs at JSPL, highlighted the significance of integrating green energy and hydrogen for reducing the carbon footprint and setting new industry benchmarks. JSPL will offer infrastructure support, with Jindal Renewables handling the green hydrogen and renewable energy facilities' development and operation. The project signifies a substantial move towards sustainable and low-emission steel production, showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the Indian steel industry.
