The Kerala government has approved the establishment of the 'Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster - Kerala' (HVIC - Kerala) to oversee a ₹133-crore hydrogen valley cluster project in the state. The initiative, a not-for-profit company, aligns with the guidelines from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, requiring the registration of such companies under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Anert, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology, will lead the HVIC - Kerala project in coordination with DST. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, is a key focus of the project. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are identified as major hubs for the project due to their port infrastructure. The project aims to develop hydrogen ecosystems, support Kerala's sustainable energy transition, create economic opportunities, and address environmental concerns. The state government's approval emphasized the project's potential to drive economic growth and environmental sustainability. Phase I, until 2030, will be funded by the Union government, partners, and the state government, with plans for expansion post-2030. Anert's CEO will serve as the chairperson and managing director of HVIC - Kerala, overseeing project coordination and management.
