Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (KCEC) has received $231 million funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s New ERA Program to establish a renewable energy facility in Questa, NM. The project will feature green hydrogen and solar generation alongside advanced battery storage systems to enhance energy resilience in KCEC's service area. With plans to generate 104 MW of renewable energy and provide power to 25,000 homes, the initiative is expected to create economic benefits of $298 million for rural communities and 350 construction jobs. Additionally, it aims to reduce carbon emissions by 98,000 tons annually, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability. The project's economic impact includes $44 million in tax revenue within five years, benefiting local communities and Native American tribes. By leveraging solar-powered green hydrogen production and advanced energy storage, KCEC aims to revolutionize its energy infrastructure, improving system reliability and resilience. The Questa Green Hydrogen Project is set to become a pioneering clean-powered green hydrogen production facility in the U.S., offering a scalable model for other organizations. KCEC's successful energy transition strategy, achieving 100% daytime solar power and stable energy costs through partnerships, positions them as a leading force in clean energy, in line with New Mexico's Energy Transition Act.
