Luxcara and GreenH to Establish 20MW Green Hydrogen Facility in Bodø, Norway
Key Ideas
  • Luxcara and GreenH, supported by the Norwegian government, have finalized plans for a 20MW green hydrogen production facility in Bodø, Norway.
  • The project is backed by NOK 129m in funding and will initially produce 3,100 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with potential for expansion to 4,800 tonnes per year in the future.
  • The hydrogen will be used to fuel the Vestfjorden ferry connection in 2026, with emphasis on utilizing byproducts like residual heat and oxygen for increased efficiency.
  • Despite global FIDs for hydrogen projects growing, AECOM notes a gap in large-scale production capacities necessary to meet Net Zero targets, indicating room for further development in the sector.
Luxcara and GreenH have received government support for their joint venture to establish a 20MW green hydrogen production facility in Bodø, Norway. The project, known as the Bodø Hydrogen Project, secured NOK 129m in funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, enabling the partners to proceed with their plans. With an initial 20MW electrolyser capacity, the facility aims to produce up to 3,100 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, catering to the Vestfjorden ferry connection. The project also has provisions for expansion to 4,800 tonnes per year through a potential additional 10MW in phase two. Luxcara and GreenH emphasize the project's proximity to local demand, efficient utilization of renewable power, and the generation of value streams from byproducts like residual heat and oxygen. The initiative is seen as a significant step in the European green hydrogen market, with Luxcara bringing its expertise in renewable energy infrastructure and GreenH handling the design and operation of the facility. However, even as global final investment decisions (FIDs) for hydrogen projects have increased, AECOM's Toby Uppington notes that large-scale production capacities are still lacking to meet Net Zero targets effectively. While the industry shows growth with a total value of $75bn in FID'd projects and a projected 48 million tonnes per annum of clean hydrogen by 2030, only 4.6 mtpa have been committed, indicating a gap in scaling up to meet sustainability goals.
