Key Ideas
  • MNRE has introduced guidelines for pilot projects focused on producing and using Green Hydrogen through innovative methods in India.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen production and technology.
  • Pilot projects will explore decentralized applications like cooking, heating, and off-grid electricity generation using Green Hydrogen.
  • By demonstrating the viability of Green Hydrogen production, India aims to advance its decarbonization efforts and clean energy objectives.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has released guidelines for pilot projects aimed at advancing the production and utilization of Green Hydrogen through innovative methods. These projects are part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with a significant budget allocation. The aim of the mission is to establish India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen production, technology, and market development, while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and decarbonizing the economy. The pilot projects will focus on decentralized applications in various settings, exploring innovative production methods like floating solar-based production and biomass-based production. The projects aim to optimize local resources, reduce transportation needs, and explore new sectors and technologies not covered in previous schemes. The utilization of Green Hydrogen in cooking, heating, and off-grid electricity generation will be explored, alongside validating its technical feasibility for various applications. A key aspect of these projects is to demonstrate the safe use of Green Hydrogen in sectors not previously covered, ensuring broader acceptance and adoption. Managed by Scheme Implementing Agencies, these projects will address current challenges in Green Hydrogen technologies, regulations, and supply chains, providing insights for scaling up production. By showcasing the viability of decentralized Green Hydrogen production, the projects will contribute significantly to India's decarbonization efforts and clean energy goals, ultimately aiding in the transition to carbon neutrality.
