MOL Group Launches Largest Green Hydrogen Plant in Central and Eastern Europe
Key Ideas
  • MOL Group inaugurated a 10-megawatt capacity green hydrogen plant in Százhalombatta, Hungary, producing 1,600 tonnes of clean, carbon-neutral green hydrogen annually.
  • The plant, equipped with electrolysis units from Plug Power, will reduce the Danube Refinery's carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the emissions of around 5400 cars.
  • Plug Power's technology generates pure hydrogen from water using renewable electricity, producing no polluting by-products and offering an environmentally friendly solution.
  • The EUR 22 million investment by MOL Group marks a significant step towards sustainability, replacing natural gas-based production processes and contributing to a more eco-friendly operation.
The MOL Group has launched the largest green hydrogen plant in Central and Eastern Europe at its Százhalombatta refinery in Hungary. With a 10 megawatt capacity, the plant is capable of producing 1,600 tonnes of clean, carbon-neutral green hydrogen annually. The plant's operation will significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the Danube Refinery by 25,000 tonnes per year, an amount equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 5400 cars. The plant features electrolysis units from Plug Power, which utilize renewable electricity to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. This innovative technology ensures that no polluting by-products are generated during the process. In fact, for every tonne of hydrogen produced, 8-9 tonnes of pure oxygen are also generated. The investment in the new plant, which amounts to EUR 22 million, highlights MOL Group's commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The technology deployed at the plant will gradually replace the existing natural gas-based production processes, which currently contribute to a significant portion of MOL Group's total carbon dioxide emissions. MOL Group, an international oil, gas, petrochemicals, and consumer retail company headquartered in Budapest, Hungary, operates across more than 30 countries with a workforce of 25,000 employees. The company has a history of over 100 years and currently manages three refineries and two petrochemical plants in Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia. Additionally, MOL Group owns a network of nearly 2400 service stations across Central and South-Eastern Europe. The launch of the green hydrogen plant represents a significant milestone for MOL Group in its efforts towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.
