MRPL's Green Hydrogen Initiative and Expansion Plans in India
Key Ideas
- MRPL is setting up a green hydrogen production unit within its refinery to produce 500 tonnes per year, aligning with India's Green Hydrogen Policy.
- Collaboration with CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory for IBB production process optimization and patenting, with plans for a 200 TPA pilot plant.
- Construction of a marketing terminal in Bengaluru to distribute petroleum products, aiming for operation by 2024-25.
- MRPL is focusing on enhancing refining capacity, expanding into new areas like chemicals and renewable fuels, and procured 16.76 million tonnes of crude oil in 2023-24.
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) is venturing into green hydrogen production by establishing a 500 tonnes per year green hydrogen unit within its refinery in Mangalore, India. This move is in line with India's Green Hydrogen Policy and National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aim to promote green hydrogen adoption across industries. The green hydrogen produced will be blended with the refinery's current hydrogen supply for internal use, reducing the carbon footprint. MRPL has partnered with CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory to develop a process for producing Iso Butyl Benzene (IBB), crucial for painkillers and perfumes. They have patented this process and plan to operationalize a 200 TPA pilot plant by 2025-26.
Furthermore, MRPL is constructing a marketing terminal in Bengaluru to facilitate the distribution of petroleum products, enhancing their supply chain efficiency. The company's expansion plans also include ramping up refining capacity, diversifying into chemicals and renewable fuels, and exploring growth opportunities within the petrochemical sector in India. In 2023-24, MRPL procured 16.76 million tonnes of crude oil, incorporating new variants like Siberian Light and Indian crudes KGD6 and KGD 98/2 into their processing. This strategic procurement aligns with their goal of adapting to changing market demands and ensuring a steady supply of raw materials for their operations.
